Puttering is a Superpower

Puttering is a GOOD thing

Putter verb (used without object)

1. to busy or occupy oneself in a leisurely, casual, or ineffective manner:to putter in the garden.

2. to move or go in a specified manner with ineffective action or little energy or purpose:to putter about the house on a rainy day.

I just spent 1 hour working in and on my garden and it was wonderful. I was also listening to a great podcast about magic and awe while watering my flowers and herbs, weeding and deadheading. I pondered what this hour would be called and “puttering” came into my head.

I looked up the definition and it pissed me off! Why must puttering is defined as ineffective? I think puttering is an effective tool for living a productive, creative life. My way of puttering is relaxed, maybe it doesn’t take much energy, but it puts me in a state of open presence to what’s in front of me. It lets my brain relax while doing something good. The outcome is visible and my internal state is one of joyful, pleasant flow. This is far from ineffective.

The Artist’s Way, a beloved book filled with tools and processes for awakening creativity, emphasizes that creativity is a dance with the Divine. Becoming present to what’s around us creates a reliable path to more abundance. A daily writing habit, author Julia Cameron calls “morning pages”, as well as pursuing “Artist Dates”, creative field trips to engage a bit more joy each week are key recommendations for those wanting to engage more creative flow.

Cameron never used the word “putter” in her book, yet she encourages her readers to get lost in tasks like ironing, walking, weeding or needlework to keep the body busy so that the mind can be open and present to creative thoughts.

Are you curious about opening up more creativity and joy in your daily life or business? I’ll be leading some new group experiences using Emotional Freedom Techniques combined with processes from The Artist's Way starting in August 2023. There’s an option to study live on my Strongsville patio or on zoom. We can putter our way to some very productive results and I can’t wait to see what we all create as a result.
